Painting Bricks and Mortar Effects tutorial

Here's a little tutorial I've put together for my method on achieving painting bricks with mortar showing. I'm sure there are other methods out there, but this is how I've learned to do it.

Step one - paint the item in the brick colour you want, I've used terracotta but it could be grey if that's what you're after

Step two - randomly paint in some lighter and darker shades of brick

Step three - varnish with a matt varnish, acrylic is probably best, I used army painter and AK Interactive in the past but generally whatever I have, other brands will of course do. This is an important step as it seals the paint and stops the filler in next step turning pink.

Step four - use some ready mixed wall filler (any brand), just a little at a time to rub into the brick etchings with your finger, where you want the mortar to show. Ideally work in small areas, then wipe of the excess with a paper towel. When you've wiped off the excess, use a wet paper towel to remove the haze, and keep removing the haze as it dries, until you get the effect you're happy with. Removing the haze is the most time consuming part, I think from memory it took about an hour for each small building, and I went through a lot of paper towels. (I believe the filler is called spackle in the USA)

Step five - use a brown wash with a small sponge to get a weathered effect. Start light and build up until you get the effect you're happy with.

Final result, you should end up with something that looks like this. I hope this helps...
